Step Book Instructions for ChildrenHow to Make a Parts of Speech Layer Book
Turn a grammar lesson into an art lesson by having children make parts of speech layer books. Students can create a step book with just a few simple instructions.
Students will create an 8 step layer book to have a record of the eight parts of speech: nouns, pronouns,verbs, adverbs, adjectives, conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections. Parts of Speech step book is a wonderful grammar resource for all students. Step Book InstructionsTake 4 pieces of paper and align them in a straight line with about 1 inch showing for all sheets except the last piece of paper. Fold the paper in half and staple the top of the step book. Once folded, you will have several flaps to write the different parts of speech. Students will color code the different parts of speech based on a color code scheme suggested by the teacher. Dependent on your school supplies, create a color code based on an eight pack box of crayons. However, the yellow crayon is difficult to see on paper, have students write the parts of speech in pencil and highlight with a yellow crayon, marker, or highlighter. After the step book is created, write one of the eight parts of speech on each of the labels. After the labels are written, have students write the definition for each parts of speech and include one example for each parts of speech. Each week, have students add to their step books. By the end of the year, students will have an extensive grammar resource that will assist them in writing stories and poems. Parts of Speech ActivitiesHave students find interesting adjectives from their stories and write down three of their favorite adjectives in their step book, or have them locate verbs from their spelling books. As well, they can record nouns, verbs, and adjectives from their science or math workbooks. In addition, students can fill in their layer book from finding entertaining parts of speech from their favorite books, songs, and poetry. Another option is for students to write a short story only using the parts of speech from their step book. Also, the teacher may ask students to write a question or sentence using a noun or verb from their step book. The classroom teacher may choose to highlight one parts of speech each week or day to reinforce the characteristics of nouns,verbs,adjectives,adverbs,pronoun,interjections,conjunctions, and prepositions. Grammar does not have to be an endless supply of worksheets, but rather have students learn about it by creating a step book that becomes a valuable grammar resource for them.
