Teachers can use caterpillar and butterfly themed finger play songs during a Kindergarten thematic unit to teach kids about the caterpillar life cycle.

Kindergarten teachers incorporate songs and activities into their instruction during a successful caterpillar and butterfly thematic unit. Songs about caterpillars and butterflies get Kindergarten students excited about learning new material and help them retain the information they’ve learned about the bugs.

Finger play and hand motion songs help students practice following directions while increasing their memory skills. Caterpillar and butterfly songs can be taught to kids prior to beginning a bug themed unit or during individual lessons.

Caterpillar and Butterfly Themed Finger Play Songs

Where Did My Caterpillar Go? Finger Play Song

by Megan Sheakoski

(Sung to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb)

Where, oh where, did my caterpillar go?

Caterpillar go, caterpillar go?

Where, of where, did my caterpillar go?

Oh look! It’s a butterfly!

As the students sing the beginning lines of the song they cup their hands around their eyes as if they were looking for something. When they sing the last line of the song they point their fingers up to the sky at the pretend butterfly.

Caterpillar and Butterfly Hand Motion Song

by Megan Sheakoski

(Sung to the tune of Are You Sleeping?)

Caterpillar, caterpillar,

In my hand, in my hand,

Soon you’ll be a butterfly.

Soon you’ll be a butterfly.

And fly away. Fly away.

The kids cup their hands and swing them gently back and forth in front of their bodies while singing about the caterpillar. They hook their thumbs and flutter their fingers like wings during the third and fourth line and then move their butterfly fingers up into the air for the last line.

Caterpillar Life Cycle Song for Kindergarten Kids

During science class Kindergarten students learn about the life cycle of the caterpillar and how caterpillars grow into butterflies. Primary teachers can teach A Caterpillar Becomes a Butterfly song to kids after a caterpillar or butterfly life cycle lesson to aid with comprehension.

A Caterpillar Becomes a Butterfly Kindergarten Song

by Megan Sheakoski

(Sung to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb)

A caterpillar has 12 eyes

Has 12 eyes, has 12 eyes,

A caterpillar has 12 eyes

So that he can see!

A caterpillar chews on leaves

Chews on leaves, chews on leaves,

A caterpillar chews on leaves

To get some energy!

Now he sleeps in a chrysalis

A chrysalis, a chrysalis,

Now he sleeps in a chrysalis

And becomes a butterfly!

Caterpillar and butterfly themed finger play songs are important instructional activity for Kindergarten kids during a bug unit. Primary teachers use caterpillar and butterfly songs to help learn to follow directions and practice memory skills. Kindergarten songs can also be used to help students learn bug information during a caterpillar and butterfly life cycle lesson plan.

For a lesson plan about teaching the caterpillar’s life cycle Kindergarten teachers can read the Butterfly Life Cycle Elementary Science Lesson. Primary teachers can also use The Very Hungry Caterpillar Kindergarten Lesson for ideas on using Eric Carle’s book The Very Hungry Caterpillar [Philomel Books, 1987] during language arts class.

After all the caterpillar and butterfly lessons have been taught Kindergarten teachers can Make Caterpillar Snacks For Elementary Kids as part of a class butterfly party.
