Letter X Activities: Making an X with Tape

On a durable piece of poster board, use masking tape to make a large letter X covering most of the surface of the page. Have kids paint the entire page in whatever patterns or color combinations they want, and remove the tape when dry. Seeing the big, white letter X is always a surprise for children, which makes this one of the best letter X activities for toddler through kindergarten.

X Marks the Spot on a Treasure Map

Another classic letter X kindergarten activity is to make a treasure map, with the destination marked in a big, red X. It can be as simple or elaborate as the teacher has time and desire to put into it. Each child gets a copy of the map, which starts in the classroom and ends at a treasure chest full of treasure. An old trunk filled with costume jewelry or chocolate coins works well, and each child can take one home along with the map as a review of the lesson.

Physical Activity Games for Letter X

Playing X tag is a great way to teach the letter X and encourage students to burn off energy and have fun at the same time. Discuss how a person standing with arms and legs outstretched looks like the letter X. Then head to the gym for a game of tag. X tag is played just like freeze tag, with one exception: when tagged, children need to "turn into an X" and freeze in position with arms and legs outstretched.

Letter X Crafts: Hanging X Mobile

Print off a template for a six-sided cube that fits on a flat sheet of paper. Copy the outline of a letter X on each side and photocopy one for each child. They can decorate each side with any materials that they want: glitter, puff balls, markers, stickers, or whatever else is in the classroom. After it is dry, assemble the 3-D cube and use fishing wire to hang it from the ceiling. For added handwriting practice for the letter X, have children draw their own letters on the cube rather than doing it for them ahead of time.
