Craft a perfect letter S lesson plan for kids with the help of creative alphabet learning games and activities on the letter S.

Try these toddler, kindergarten, and preschool letter S activities the next time the alphabet is taught in class or at home. The games, books, and activities are all age-appropriate and keep kids focused on learning the alphabet through play.

Teaching Letter S: Talking about Spots

As a class, name animals with spots such as a cow, dalmation, giraffe, and cheetah. Kids can draw these animals, decorate printable coloring sheets, or even act them out in a game of charades. Read Put Me in the Zoo by Robert Lopshire [Beginner Books, Inc: 1988,] a funny book about a fantastical creature who can do amazing things with his spots.

Letter S Activity with Spray Bottles

Spray is a letter S word that lends itself to all kinds of appealing activities for toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarteners. Fill spray bottles with water and let kids spray construction paper or the sidewalk to see the color changes.

Kindergarten Activities on the Letter S: Sorting by Size

Size begins with the alphabet letter S. Different sizes are all around children all the time; encourage them to notice this by reading It's Not Easy Being Big by Stephanie St. Pierre [Random House: 1998.] This Sesame Street picture book introduces concepts of small, smaller, smallest and big, bigger, biggest. As a conclusion to the activity, go on a walk and collect rocks to sort by size afterward.

Seed Matching Game for Teaching the Alphabet to Pre-K

Ahead of time, obtain seeds for at least 5 different kinds of fruits or vegetables - these can be store bought seed packets or removed from vegetables at home and dried. Mix together all the kinds of seeds and have the class work in groups to sort the seeds into groups, or keep each type separate and let the class decide what type of fruit or vegetable they came from. Cut open whole fruits and vegetables in class and pass around each to let kids see the seeds once they have guessed correctly.

Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star Game Teaching Letter S

After pointing out that star begins with S, hand out construction paper stars on craft sticks, dim the lights, and play a soft lullaby CD of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." Kids hold up their stars while singing along. This simple activity quickly captivates young children and is great for teaching letter to toddlers. This is also a great cool-down activity when kids get a little too rowdy.

Turn ordinary kindergarten or preschool lesson plans into fabulous alphabet teaching opportunities. These letter S activities are designed to not only help kids learn letters, but to see how the letter S relates to the world around them.
