Make learning the ABCs exciting with these hands-on letter P lesson plan ideas, including games, crafts, and activities.

Teaching the letter P in a kindergarten or preschool classroom, as well as to toddlers, requires an innovative teaching approach filled with letter P activities and games like these.

Letter P Craft: Decorating a Pillowcase

Pillow and pillowcase are two great words starting with the letter P. With simple and inexpensive supplies like bric-a-brac, puffy paint, and fabric markers, let each child decorate his or her own pillowcase to take home at the end of the letter P unit.

For additional alphabet recognition skills, encourage children to write the letter P on their pillowcase with in marker or puffy paint so they can see it every night at bedtime.

Using Popcorn in Letter P Activities

A simple preschool alphabet craft that kids will love is stringing popcorn (and eating some, too.) If possible, pop the popcorn in the classroom so kids can watch the kernels exploding and hear the delightful sound it makes. Use the popcorn chains to decorate the room, or tie into necklaces and send them home.

Popping Alphabet Games for Kindergarten

"Pop" is a great letter P word that lends itself very easily to action and physical activity. Kids could pretend that they are popping kernels of corn, sing "Pop Goes the Weasel," or dance as a class to "Finger Popping" by Georgiana Liccione Stewart [Preschool Aerobic Fun, Kimbo Educational, 1983.]

Printing Press Demonstration

Printing press starts with P, and they were a big deal when they were first invented. Even if the class can't take a field trip to a historic village to see an actual printing press demonstration, teachers can still explain the concept and show pictures. Bring in a newspaper and explain that before computers, every letter had to be stamped on each sheet of paper and hung up to dry. Provide kids with alphabet stamps and encourage them to make their own newspaper.

Letter P Activity: Celebrate Pajama Day

A fun culmination to a letter P learning unit is celebrating with a pajama party. Make the whole day pajama-themed by wearing pajamas and slippers to school (this includes teachers too!) Students can spend the day coloring pajamas on paper dolls, and examining the wide variety of pajama styles with a fun book like Pajama Time by Sandra Boynton [Workman Publishing, 2000.]

Letter activities for preschool and kindergarten are essential for a good lesson plan on the letter P. Teaching the alphabet to young students means that a teacher must continually recapture their interest with engaging activities and games.
