Without plenty of outside-the-box crafts and activities, an alphabet lesson plan gets a little dry for younger learners. Here is a list of letter O activities for use with kids ages 2 to 6 to help teach the letter O.
Gluing Cheerios on a Letter O for Alphabet Recognition
Reinforce letter recognition by giving kids creative freedom to decorate a letter O using cereal rounds. Fruit Loops are larger and better for toddler hands, while older students can handle smaller cereal like Cheerios.
Sensory Table Letter Activities: O is for Oatmeal
Instead of putting sand in the classroom sensory table, try replacing it with dry oats. The texture and shape is fascinating for kids to explore, both with sand toys and with their hands. A fun but potentially messy alternative is to put cooked oatmeal in the sensory table and let kids squish to their heart's content!
Discovering Latin Roots with the "Oct-" Numerical Prefix
Many words in the English language start with the letter O. Can students think of some? Display a picture of a stop sign or other octagon. Explain that "octagon" starts with O. "Oct" comes from the Latin root meaning "8." Can anyone think of an animal that starts with "oct?" An octopus has 8 legs, just like a stop sign has 8 sides. Finish the discussion by handing out printable coloring pages of a stop sign and/or an octopus.
Alphabet Games for Kindergarten: Turn On, Turn Off Robot
On/off robots is a great kindergarten or preschool alphabet game to play, and it adapts easily to any number of students. Talk briefly about how robots and point out the letter R sound at the beginning of the word.
Show them how to move like robots with jerky motions, and then begin calling out "Off!" and "On!" The kids must use their listening skills and freeze when they hear "Off!" For more fun, make them different kinds of robots every round (for example, fast, slow, scary, flying, or crazy robots.)
Hands On Letter O Lessons: Making Orange Juice
Most of the students in a typical preschool or kindergarten class have never made fresh-squeezed orange juice before. They may not even know that orange juice comes from actual oranges! All that's needed is a juicer; no added sugar is needed for drinkable orange juice.
