Teaching the alphabet to toddlers through kindergarten is fun with these letter L crafts, games, and creative activities.

Old standard alphabet teaching tools like worksheets are valuable, but they need to be supplemented with fun letter L activities like these to keep students motivated and interested. Here are an assortment of creative games, crafts, and letter L activities for kindergarten, pre-K, and toddlers.

Letter L Activities: Learning about Lungs

A great way to teach the letter L to kindergarten is to ask kids if they know where the air goes when they take a deep breath. Display a diagram of the inside of the body, point out the lungs, and emphasize that lungs begin with the letter L. Hand out a picture of the body, encouraging kids to color the parts and label the lungs with an L.

Demonstrate blowing up a balloon in class and explain how lungs are the same way. When people breathe in, their lungs fill with air and expand. Let the air out of the balloon and explain that when they breathe out, the air leaves and the lungs get small again. Have children practice making their own lungs expand and contract.

London Bridge as a Preschool Letter L Activity

Simple games and songs can do a lot toward teaching the letter L to preschool children and toddlers. "London Bridge" is a pre-K favorite that is simple and easy to play. Make sure that everyone has a turn at being the bridge and running beneath it.

Introducing Math Concepts: L is for "Less Than"

Other than number recognition, one of the most basic math and pre-counting concepts is that different groups can be more or less than others. Using marbles, dominoes, matchbox cars, or other classroom objects, practice comparing two groups and deciding which group has less than the other.

Twister is a Classic Letter L Game Teaching Right and Left

Kids in kindergarten or younger probably won't be able to distinguish right from left yet, but it's important to introduce the concept nonetheless. Doing so can be part of daily classroom alphabet activities.

Practice raising right and left hands or feet on command, then settle down to play Twister in small groups. To help younger children remember right and left (and to keep them from getting to frustrated), it may be helpful to put "L" and "R" on masking tape on each hand and foot.

Alphabet Craft for Letter L: Weaving on a Loom

People weave using looms. Most children probably have never seen a loom before, so display a real loom (or at least a picture of one.) Buy or make a chipboard loom for each older student and show them how to thread the warp and weave yarn horizontally through it create the weft.

Younger children without the manual dexterity to use an actual loom can still try their hand at simple weaving by threading 3/4" strips of construction paper through a large sheet of differently-colored construction paper with vertical slits cut in it.

These pre-K and kindergarten activities and crafts nicely complement any alphabet lesson plan. Just make sure that a letter L lesson plan for preschool or kindergarten teaches correct alphabet sounds: L says "llll," not "luh."
