Teaching the Letter K: Ideas for Teachers, aslakr
Use these kindergarten or preschool alphabet crafts, games, and ideas to craft a fantastic lesson plan on the letter K.

These sample activities provide a great basis for making kindergarten and preschool alphabet lesson plans, or even facilitating alphabet learning for toddlers at home. All activities are appropriate for preschoolers, kindergartners, or toddlers.

Letter K Activities for Kindergarten: Learning Basic Karate

Learning the alphabet can get boring, especially for kids who like to remain active. A great letter K activity for students like this is taking a basic karate lesson. A local karate instructor could make a visit to the school and roll out mats, teach basic moves, and explain the gi (the white outfit worn in karate) and the belt system. Afterward, students can decorate the word "karate" and draw a picture of themselves doing their favorite move.

Critical Thinking about Pets with the Letter K

During the letter K lesson plan, listen to "Kangaroo" by Joe McDermott [Everywhere You Go, True Blue Music: 2002,] a silly song about what life would be like with a kangaroo for a pet. Encourage kids to bounce around like kangaroos during the song if they feel like it. As a class, discuss what makes a good pet. Divide the board or a paper into two columns, one for good pets and one for not-so-good pets. Label each with their initial letter. Make sure that kangaroo and kitten are both on the list, and emphasize that they start with the letter K.

Kiwi Science and Observation in a Letter K Lesson Plan

Introduce the word kiwi, which begins with K. Display a whole kiwi and let class members examine and describe it. Based on what they can see, what do they think the kiwi will look like on the inside when it is cut open? Slice it in half and let kids see the colorful fruit and pattern of seeds inside. This is a great method for teaching the letter K with a simple scientific experiment.

Letter K Craft: How to Make a Homemade Kazoo

One of the best letter K activities is making a kazoo that kids can play. This is one of the more simple alphabet crafts:

  1. Each child decorates a toilet paper or paper towel tube;
  2. An adult pokes at least one hole in the tube with a pencil; and
  3. Use a rubber band to secure a square of wax paper over one end.

The child hums into the other end and listens to the funny sounds that come out!

Imaginative Play for Teaching the Letter K to Kindergarten and Pre-K

Provide crowns, capes, and scepters in the dress up area of the room so kids can role play being kings. Another good letter K activity would be to decorate a "kingly throne" (a regular chair or sturdy cardboard box) to use in pretend play.

These alphabet games, crafts, and letter K activities are great for any alphabet lesson plan or unit. Parents and educators can use these techniques to keep kids interested in learning their ABCs.
