Kindergarten Activities on the Letter JLetter Learning Fun for Toddlers, Preschoolers, and Kindergarteners
These ideas for a letter J lesson plan generate interest in the topic, help kids with alphabet recognition, and keep them entertained while learning letters.
Parents and educators in need of ideas for teaching kids about the letter J can try some of these fun and inexpensive ideas to get kids excited about learning the alphabet. Alphabet Recognition Activity With JeansTalk about denim jeans, which start with the letter J. They may be pants, dresses, or skirts in shades of blue or black. Chances are that several students in the class are even wearing them right now. Hand out small square-shaped cut outs of old jeans to students and let them glue them to paper. Older kids can create a letter J on blank paper, while younger children can decorate a pre-printed letter J with their blue jean scraps. Jelly Beans Letter J Games: Don't Eat My Pet!Collect about 12 small pictures of animals and have them assembled on the same sheet of paper together. Have one child leave the room while the others choose one special animal to be the "pet." Cover each animal with a jelly bean and ask the child to return to the room. He or she slowly removes jelly beans, naming the animal underneath, and when the jelly bean covering the "pet" is removed the class yells, "Don't eat my pet!" It's then the next child's turn. Jam Painting Sensory Activity for Teaching Letter JKids love to finger paint, so capitalize on that interest and let them do something really outlandish: paint with jam! Some kids may be reluctant at first, but the texture is so interesting that they will enjoy it once they get started. Encourage them to paint the letter J, or something beginning with J. Movement and Physical Activity: JumpingPlay that involves lots of jumping and running, (emphasizing that jump starts with the letter J, of course) is a great way to teach letters to toddlers, pre-K, and kindergarten. A great song to play – and kids will probably want to do it over and over again – is "Jumping and Counting" by Jim Gill [Jim Gill's Irrational Anthem, Jim Gill Music: 2001.] Dotting Lowercase J for Letter RecognitionProvide each child with a handout featuring lots of capital and lowercase Js to decorate. But most of the lowercase Js are missing their dots! With hole punch leftovers and some glue, ask children to help fix the lowercase Js by adding dots in the right places. These fun activities on the letter J can be a part of any alphabet lesson plan. These letter J games and activities can be adapted for play in any type of classroom or at home, with any age of young learner. Let children have fun while learning their ABCs and they will absorb so much more from the lesson.
