Add these alphabet crafts, games, and activities to any lesson plan on the letter "i" to engage learners from ages 2 to 6.

Whether a parent, homeschooling family, or a school teacher, teaching the alphabet to young learners requires lots of outside the box thinking. Keep kids interested with short and sweet letter learning activities and crafts featuring the letter I.

Letter I Activities on Changing Sounds

I is a tricky letter that often changes sounds from a long I to a short I. Demonstrate the difference between the sounds and practice them as a class. Make a class list of words that begin with short i (infant, igloo, icky, iguana, insect) and long i (ice cream, idea, island, ivory.)

Preschool Alphabet Crafts: I is for Ice Cream

Hand out pieces of paper and brown construction paper in a triangle "cone" shape. Have children glue the cone on the paper and then paint the ice cream on top. Give kids a bunch of "sprinkles" (made with a hole punch) or have them make their own to glue onto the ice cream.

Melting Ice Experiment for Teaching Letter I to Pre-K

Harness a child's natural fascination with water and ice by doing basic experiments and making scientific observations about melting ice. Propose different ways of making an ice cube melt: setting it on a table, putting it in the windowsill, holding it in one's hands, and blasting it with a hair dryer.

Let children hypothesize about which option will melt the ice cube fastest. Test out their hypotheses with a timer and see what happens. Talk about why ice melts and how water turns back into ice again.

Hands-on Letter I Activities for Toddlers: Making an Island

Explain to kids what an island is, emphasizing that it starts with the letter I. Ask if anyone can point out an island on a globe or map. Fill the classroom sensory table with water and sand for building an island. Be sure to include an assortment of miniature plastic trees and animals to decorate their island when complete.

Teaching Letter I through Geography

There are many place names beginning with the letter I. Get out a globe or map and begin naming and pointing out place names starting with I, such as Iceland, Ireland, Istanbul, India, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa. Take the opportunity for a brief discussion on proper nouns versus common nouns, if children seem capable of understanding it.

Educators and parents can jazz up any lesson plan on the letter I with some of these suggestions. Learning the alphabet through games, crafts, and experiments can be comprehensive and enriching.
