Kindergarten Activities on the Letter G

Alphabet Games for Toddlers, Preschoolers, and Kindergartners

This lesson plan on the letter G helps young students with alphabet recognition, capital vs. lowercase, the hard G sound, geography, science, and critical thinking.

Teaching the letter G to kindergarten students (and younger) is easy with these fun letter G activities and preschool alphabet crafts. Not only do they teach the alphabet, they introduce kids to subjects from geography to science.

Growing Grass for Letter Learning

Grass seed is inexpensive and grows easily and quickly, making it optimal for an alphabet recognition lesson on the letter G. Both grass and grow start with G. Provide each child with a cup or container of dirt. Using their index finger, make a letter G in the dirt (younger children will need help). Put the grass seed in the shape they've made and cover it up, and the grass will begin to grow in a letter G!

Letter G Lesson Plan Grapes Activity

Grapes are a fruit that begins with G. Probably all of the children have had grapes before, but do they know how they grow? Show them a picture of a grapevine, then talk about the different varieties (colors) of grapes.

Hand out a picture with two different bunches of grapes, one bunch has capital G on each grape and one has lowercase g on each; have children color the picture, making the capital G grapes purple and the lowercase g grapes green. When everyone is done, count how many grapes of each variety are in the picture.

World Geography Letter G Activities

Show children a globe and emphasize that globe starts with G. It is like a map of the entire world, and shows us every place on earth. Take the opportunity to introduce concepts like oceans, continents, countries, and states. Show children where they live on the globe, and where any of the children's faraway relatives may live.

Introducing Science Concepts and the hard G sound: G is for Gravity

Talk together about what the letter G says Sometimes it makes a soft sound, like in the word "giraffe," but usually it makes the hard G sound. The word "gravity" is a science term that starts with G. Does anyone know what gravity is? Explain that it is the force that pulls things to the middle of the earth, or makes them fall down.

Collect objects around the room that start with G (some which have been discretely placed by the teacher beforehand) such as glue, glove, goggles, golf ball, or a gift. Have children take turns standing on a chair and dropping them to see gravity at work.

Developing Critical Thinking Skills with Gloves

Name things that are worn outside in cold weather, like hats, snowpants, and scarves. Can students think of anything that starts with the letter G that they could wear outside in the cold? Hand out a printable coloring sheet of gloves labeled with the letter G. When children finish coloring, display a pair of mittens beside a pair of gloves and have children compare and contrast them.

When crafting an alphabet lesson plan for young children, it's important that it includes lots of fun letter learning activities. Kids get bored easily without plenty of variety. These letter G activities for toddlers, pre-K, or kindergarten create successful learning opportunities.
