Alphabet learning is essential to the development of skills necessary for reading, but sometimes it's hard to motivate kids with worksheets and handwriting practice pages. This fun lesson plan for the letter F in preschool or kindergarten helps kids learn and keeps them engaged.

Teaching the Letter F to Kindergarten with Flags

Flag, which starts with F, is one of the most visible symbols of a country. Discuss the different places children see the flag of their country: banks, libraries, schools, and even people's yards. Using a large rectangle of fabric, paint or draw the country's flag together and display it in the classroom.

Another option is to show children pictures of different countries' flags, let each student choose and copy his or her favorite, and stick it on a large world map together over the appropriate country.

Alphabet Craft: Paper Plate Frog Puppet

One fun and easy alphabet craft for children is making a frog paper plate puppet. Each child will need a paper plate, crayons, and a coloring sheet with eyes, tongue, and legs (see image below, click to see it larger.)

Color and cut out the body parts. Fold the paper plate in half and color green on the outside, red on the inside. Glue the eyes on top, accordion fold the legs and glue them on the bottom, and glue the tongue in the mouth. Kids can make the frog open and close his mouth by squeezing the paper plate at the fold.

Feather Pen Handwriting Practice for Letter F

Use the letter F to write letters in a fun way. Using feather pens (or flower pens), let each class member trace capital and lowercase letter F on a handwriting practice sheet.

Best Friends Forever Craft for Letter F

Explain that F is for friend, and talk about what makes someone a friend. Teachers may want to read a picture book on the subject, such as Little Quack's New Friend by Lauren Thompson [Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers: 2006.]

Make a line of paper dolls, one for each class member, and have children come up a few at a time to color one doll like himself or herself. Another letter F craft would be to have children string a bracelet or necklace, including beads that spell out "BFF" for "Best Friends Forever" to give to their best friend.

Alphabet Recognition Matching Game Teaching Letter F

Print an equal number of capital and lowercase letter Fs on index cards, and then throw in some cards with other letters of the alphabet. Children play memory, trying to match the capital F to the lowercase F. The number of cards should depend on the age of children in the class. For toddlers, all letters beside F can be omitted.
