Kindergarten Activities on the Letter CAlphabet Lesson Plan for Kindergartners, Preschoolers, and Toddlers
These lesson plans contain letter C activities that teach the alphabet and explore subjects from science to art in creative new ways.
Parents and teachers of toddlers, pre-K students, and kindergarteners need a broad repertoire of tools to help kids learn alphabet recognition. This letter C lesson plan contains age-appropriate games and fun for any classroom instruction about the letters of the alphabet. Teaching Letter C with Cows and CalvesDisplay a picture of a cow and ask what letter it starts with. Then explain that baby cows are called calves, which also start with C. Hand out an outline of a big and little cow to color, asking kids to label the mother cow with capital C, and the calf with a lowercase c. If appropriate, have a basic biology lesson with other pictures of animal moms and their babies. Most children know the names of the adult animals, but not the babies. Introduce them to words like "gosling," "cub," "foal," "kid," and "fawn." Letter C Activity: Mixing ColorsAfter talking about how the word color starts with C, cover a table with newspaper and provide everyone with smocks, brushes, paper, and the primary colors of paint. Explain that every single color in the world is made by mixing the three primary colors – red, yellow, and blue – in different combinations. Demonstrate how red and blue make purple, and blue and yellow make green. Let children experiment with the three primary colors themselves. Children who catch on and seem to enjoy this activity might want to try choosing a color on a color wheel or out of a box of crayons and trying to create the matching color by mixing their paints. Using a Cat Craft to Teach the Letter C SoundShow children a large cut out of a cat. What sound does a cat make? Explain to children that most of the time, cats meow. Sometimes, however, cats hiss or yowl. The letter C is the same way. Display a large letter C and tell children that it usually makes the hard C sound, but sometimes it makes the soft C sound, or even says 'ch' when it is paired with an H. Carrot Science Experiment for Teaching Letter CThere are lots of vegetables that start with the letter C: Carrot, cucumber, cabbage, corn, and cauliflower. Celery and cherry also start with C (see "the Letter C Sound" above.) Slice a carrot and pass around the pieces. Let class members use their observational skills to describe it. Explain that right now, the carrot slices are hard. Is there a way to make them soft? Steam or boil the slices and pass them around again in a small container. Talk about why this made the carrots soft. Preschool Alphabet Crafts: Tin Can PhoneMost kids today have never built a clubhouse or used a tin can phone. Let them decorate tin cans with paint or stickers, then punch a hole at the bottom of each and tie together pairs of cans. Show children how to hold the string taut and work in groups of two to relay messages back and forth. Teaching the letters of the alphabet can be fun and interesting. Use these experiments, demonstrations, and crafts to engage young learners in a fun lesson plan about the letter C.
