Kindergarten Activities on the Letter BTeaching Letters to Kindergarteners, Preschoolers, and Toddlers
Kids get bored with handwriting practice worksheets. Supplement a lesson on the letter B with these creative games, crafts, and activities for letter recognition.
Shake up the boring classroom with routine and get kids excited about learning the alphabet with these letter B learning activities. Just remember that a capital and lowercase B look much different from each other, so make sure to emphasize both in all letter B lessons. Kindergarten or Pre-K Letter Activity: B is for Beach Discuss the beach as a class. Have any students been to the beach before? What do they wear to the beach? What sights and smells are at the beach? Read Miranda's Beach Day by Holly Keller [Greenwillow Books, 2009] to learn more about crabs and sand castles with vibrant pictures. Sensory Table Beach HuntFill the sensory table (or a plastic container for each child) with sand and several other beach-themed objects such as seashells and pebbles. Children can experiment with burying these objects and unearthing them again using either sand toys or their fingers. Gluing Buttons on the Letter B for Alphabet RecognitionDecorating a letter B is a great way to reinforce letter recognition with young children. Provide them with glue, an assortment of buttons of all different colors and sizes, and a printout of the letters B and b. Give them free reign to decorate their letters and encourage them to sign their name at the bottom. Activity and Movement with Baseball Letter B GameIn the large muscle gym room or an area outside, show the children how to set up a baseball diamond. Run around the bases as a class in the correct order, naming each base in turn. Most kindergartners will be able to hit a wiffle ball on a tee; pre-K students and toddlers may do better with a larger rubber ball. After everyone has had a few turns at bat, go inside and teach children the words to "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." Hands-On Letter B Activity: Making BreadExplain how bakers make bread dough. They add the ingredients and let it rise for several hours, then punch it down and knead the dough before putting it in the oven. Hand clumps of pre-made dough to everyone and let them practice kneading it. Make sure to demonstrate the correct kneading motion first. Have bread and jam for snacks afterward. Teaching the Letter B through BuildingLarge cardboard "bricks" in primary colors are standard equipment for classrooms full of young architects. Explain how the words "build" and "bricks" both start with the letter B. Ask what the children can share about Bob the Builder. In small groups, let kids work together to build different structures such as a road, a castle, a school, a tunnel, or a house out of bricks. Teaching the letters of the alphabet doesn't have to be dull; it just takes a few creative letter B activities like these in addition to traditional worksheets and drills.
