Teaching Letter A in Kindergarten with Ant Farm ObservationKids love to watch ants in their natural environment. Talk as a class about ants, how they work together, what they eat, and why they dig tunnels. Let kids see ants in action with an ant farm. Commercial ant farms in all shapes and sizes are available at toy stores or Internet retailers. Encourage children to draw what they see, labeling ants with the letter A. Learning Letter A by Making AnthillsDiscuss how ants have homes, just like people do. Take children outside to hunt for anthills, or show them pictures of ants and anthills. Fill the sensory table with slightly damp sand and plastic ants (raisins will do in a pinch) to let kids practice forming their own anthills and arranging the ants. Preschool Alphabet Craft: Make an "A" MobileProvide children with popsicle or craft sticks, some whole and others cut in half. See if they can figure out (with the aid of a picture, if necessary) how to put together two whole sticks and one half stick to make a capital letter A. Have them glue their letter As together and decorate with glitter, markers, or stickers. When all letters are dry, create a letter A mobile with wire coat hangers and display in the classroom. Imaginative Play with the Letter ATeach a short lesson about astronauts, emphasizing that 'astronaut' begins with the letter A. A good picture book to introduce the topic is I Want to Be an Astronaut by Byron Barton [Crowell, 1988.] In the dress up area of the classroom, take out an astronaut suit and helmet for them to try on. Letter A Games for KindergartenersFind and locate pictures of objects beginning with A from magazines or the Internet and glue them to index cards (apple, ant, astronaut, axe, arrow). Add a handful of cards with pictures that don't start with A. As a class, turn each one over and take turns deciding if it starts with A or not.
