Kindergarten kids can make caterpillar crafts and projects during caterpillar and butterfly lessons as part of an elementary bug themed unit.

Primary school teachers can make caterpillar and butterfly themed lessons lots of fun by making caterpillar craft projects with their students. The caterpillar crafts and activities are used to help kids understand science concepts, practice letter sounds, and remember caterpillar and butterfly life cycle facts.

Egg Carton 12 Eye Caterpillar Craft

While studying about caterpillars and the butterfly life cycle primary students learn that caterpillars have 12 eyes, 6 on each side of their head. After discussing why it is advantageous for caterpillars to have so many eyes kids can make their own 12 eye caterpillar craft.

To make the craft each student receives a 3 or 4 cup section of an egg carton. The kids paint and decorate the egg carton to look like a caterpillar using supplies such as pom poms or felt. The students then add pipe cleaners, chenille stems, to the top of the egg carton for antennae and glue 6 mini-googly eyes to each side of the caterpillar.

How to Make Thumbprint Caterpillars With Kids

Kindergarten students can make thumbprint caterpillars to accompany caterpillar themed lessons. Thumbprint caterpillar crafts are easy to make using supplies like construction paper and paint or ink pads that are found in most primary classrooms.

Students repeatedly press their thumb into paint or onto a stamp pad and then onto the construction paper to form a caterpillar shape. The kids can then use thumbprint caterpillars to illustrate the butterfly life cycle by adding in butterflies made out of handprints and a chrysalis made from a palm print.

Practice the C Sound with Letter C Caterpillars

Primary children can create caterpillars using the letter C. After learning how to write the letter C and make the C sound, students can make a caterpillar project to practice letter C skills.

To review the letter C and the C sound, the teacher gives the students die cut Cs and shows them how to create a caterpillar. The teacher can also have Kindergarteners who are learning to write the letter C practice writing them in a row to form a caterpillar. The students then use art supplies to add caterpillar features to the Cs.

Paper Chain Caterpillar Fact Project

During a caterpillar and butterfly themed unit elementary children will learn many facts about caterpillars. A caterpillar chain is a fun project that helps students remember new information form their bug lessons. Each time the kids learn new something new about caterpillars, butterflies, or the life cycle they write the fact on a strip of paper.

The teacher staples the strips together to form a chain that is displayed at the front of the classroom. A caterpillar face is stapled to the front of the chain and the students can use the paper chain craft project to review information from their caterpillar lessons.

During a caterpillar and butterfly unit Kindergarten and first grade teachers can make egg carton caterpillars, caterpillar thumbprints, letter C caterpillars and a caterpillar fact paper chain with their students. Caterpillar craft projects and activities help primary kids practice the letter C and learn new science information.

Primary school teachers can read Butterfly Life Cycle Elementary Science Lesson for more information on how to teach students how caterpillars become butterflies. Teachers can also use the ideas in Make Caterpillar Snacks for Primary Kids or Kindergarten Caterpillar and Butterfly Songs to create a fun and interactive caterpillar and butterfly themed unit.
