Descriptive Poetry Example for Primary Students
Primary students love color and painting. Teach students how to create a painting with words by using descriptive language in a color poem.
Brainstorm with students the different colors of the rainbow or colors in general. Write all colors given by the students and if possible write the color with markers that correspond. You may wish to have a 64 box of crayons for all the different colors that will be suggested by students.
After the brainstorming session (also known as a thought shower), take a poll of students' favourite colors and choose one color as your example to illustrate descriptive poetry. Teacher may also choose his favourite color for the color poem example.
After the color has been chosen, divide students into groups to brainstorm ideas for the particular color. Students are welcome to use words or pictures for the color. Each group will present their ideas for the specific color to the class. After, the class will write a color poem together with the teacher and use their ideas from their groups.

Write the color template on chart paper. Ask students what the common element is for all of them. Students should say that the common element is the five senses. Ask students to describe the five senses: touch, taste,sight,sound, and smell. Ask students to imagine the smell of a skunk spray or a fragrant rose. It is ideal to have a few scents available for the students to smell such as vinegar, flowers, or maple syrup. All of these scents are very fragrant.
Continue to do this process with look, feel, sound, and even taste. If taste is an issue because of health concerns, create a visual for students to remember the taste of ice cream, cookies, and vegetables. Great descriptive words will be employed to show their like or dislike of a taste. As students are describing the five senses, write the words under each heading. After students are aware of the five senses, it is time to write a color poem as a class.
Color Poem Example: Orange
- Orange tastes like pumpkin pie freshly baked from the oven.
- Orange feels like a sticky lollipop.
- Orange looks like a bouncy basketball.
- Orange sounds like a crackling fire.
- Orange smells like freshly squeezed orange juice.
For each part of the poem, use a separate piece of chart paper to list the ideas. After all ideas are listed for taste, poll the class on their favourite. A good mini lesson for this part of the poetry lesson is the use of adjectives. Adjectives will make the picture more vivid as students describe a color.
After all the five lines for the color poem is chosen, it is time to illustrate the poem. There are countless ways for students to illustrate their poem. Paint, clay, and crayons are just a few art mediums that can be used to present their poem. Teacher may chose the appropriate finished product for the color poems.
Descriptive poetry is a good introduction to illustrate to students how words create pictures. Descriptive words are useful in creating poems, stories, and for many other writing mediums. Color poems are a good stepping stone to show students the impact of powerful words.
