Apple Shape Poem Primary Lesson PlanHow to Teach Elementary Kids to Write Concrete Poetry
Elementary teachers can teach students to write apple concrete or shape poems during a fall apple theme unit lesson plan.
Shape or concrete poems are descriptive poems that are written in the shape of the topic of the poem. Apple shape poems are written and illustrated in the shape of an apple. Elementary students can learn to write concrete poetry during an apple themed unit. Teach Kids to Use Descriptive Sensory WordsThe elementary teacher brings in a variety of apples in different colors, shapes, and sizes. The teacher prompts the class to use descriptive words to describe the apples. The teacher then invites the students to come up and choose an apple from the table. The teacher explains that the students are going to use their five senses to come up with a list if words and phrases to describe their apple. The kids observe, smell, taste, listen to, and feel the apple and write down their thoughts. Teach Students to Write an Apple Shape PoemThe teacher tells the students that they are going to use their lists of descriptive, sensory words to write a poem about their apple. She explains that they are going to write a special poem called a shape poem or a concrete poem. The teacher tells the class that they will be writing their poems in the shape of an apple. The teacher shows the students an example of a shape poem about a banana. After seeing an example of the concrete poem the kids use their lists to write an apple shape poem rough draft during Writer’s Workshop time. The students work with the teacher and a partner to revise and edit their apple poetry. Illustrate and Display Concrete Apple PoetryAfter elementary kids have proofread their poetry they are ready to write their final copies. The teacher explains to the students that their poem will be written in the shape of an apple. The teacher demonstrates how to lightly draw an outline of an apple on the paper. She shows the class how to turn their papers to write their poem very lightly on the apple shape. By writing the poem very lightly with pencil mistakes can easily be corrected. Once the students have satisfactorily written the poem in pencil they can use the art materials of their choosing to darken their words and illustrate the poem. The apple shape poems are then displayed in the classroom for others to read. For more information on concrete or shape poems teachers and students can read Write ABC, Haiku, Quatrain, and Concrete Poems while Elementary Apple Themed Lesson Plans and Johnny Appleseed Elementary Lesson Plan can be used to create an apple themed unit.
